Angels for Change Applauds Senators Wyden and Crapo for Commitment to Solving Drug Shortage Crisis

TAMPA, Fla, February 1, 2024 - Laura Bray, founder and Chief Change Maker of patient advocacy group Angels for Change issued a statement on the new plan released by the Senate Finance Committee leadership on solutions for drug shortages.

“Drug shortages are not just a ‘supply chain’ issue but a dire patient issue,” Bray said. “The pharmaceutical supply chain is the supply chain that fills the hands that save our people and every day in our country those hands are empty due to shortages and our patients are harmed.

As such, I would like to commend Chairman Wyden and Ranking Member Crapo and their staff teams for issuing a thoughtful white paper containing meaningful proposals to address our current drug shortage crisis. This document correctly focuses work on the biggest drivers of this problem and proposes worthwhile measures to correct these factors.

Further, the proposals wisely prioritize efficient solutions to persistent drug shortages of Generic Sterile Injectables (GSI). This approach is robust and impactful. It looks to align near-term reforms that will stabilize patient access of essential medicines while also initiating broader, systemic supply chain redundancy.

I am encouraged by the Senate Finance Committee’s commitment to a real, bipartisan legislative process. This is the kind of action that patients deserve in the here and now. Angels for Change pledges to be a constructive resource in this process because no patient should be faced with harm, up to death, because of a drug shortage and our beloved physicians must have the tools to save patients where and when they need them every time for every patient.”

Angels for Change will continue to advocate for patients as work to end the drug shortage crisis continues.
