Spotlight on America: Cancer drug shortages leave families waiting; Texas startup tries to fill the gap

A recent Spotlight on America report from The National Desk highlights a reality patients and families know far too well: even lifesaving medications aren’t always available when they’re needed most.

The story follows pediatric cancer patient Bryton, whose treatment journey included not only the challenges of cancer, but the uncertainty of whether his medication would be there when he needed it. His experience reflects a growing national crisis, with hundreds of active drug shortages in the U.S., many involving critical cancer treatments. For patients, these shortages can mean delays, changes in care, and added fear during an already difficult time.

The segment also features Laura Bray and Abby Bray, who continue to bring the patient voice to the forefront of this issue. Because behind every shortage is a patient waiting, for treatment, for answers, and for a system that works.

Angels for Change is helping drive solutions through Project PROTECT, an initiative designed to proactively address drug shortages and create more resilient supply pathways. This work is what enabled a rapid response in partnership with Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Company, helping accelerate access to essential medications like methotrexate when patients needed it most.

Before Angels for Change, there was no clear path for patients facing drug shortages—no single place to turn for help navigating the system. That’s why we built the Drug Shortage Hotline and continue to advocate for solutions that ensure patients can access the medications they need.

Stories like Bryton’s are a reminder of what’s at stake. Patients are at the heart of our mission, and we won’t stop working until no one has to wait for the treatment they need.
