Project GOLD highlighted in USP Article

Nearly half of U.S. drug shortages, 47%, are tied to sudden spikes in demand, according to new data from the USP Medicine Supply Map.

One big reason? “Protective purchasing”. When buyers worry a medication may become scarce, they often order more than needed. While a natural response, this can actually make shortages worse.

In the article, Protective Purchasing: A Hidden Amplifier of Drug Shortages, Angels for Change Project GOLD is highlighted as a solution-oriented initiative that addresses the lack of shared, credible information across the supply chain. By working with distributors and manufacturers, Project GOLD watches for early shortage signals to appear and maintain “always-on” allocation and emergency buffer for essential medicines. This reduces panic buying, builds trust, keeps emergency supply on the shelf, and ensures critical medicines reach the patients who need them most.

To end drug shortages, we have to look beyond manufacturing solutions. We need coordination, trusted information, and emergency back up plans across the supply chain for all US patients.

At Angels for Change, we work to push real, lasting solutions forward—because patients deserve a shortage-free tomorrow, and they’re counting on us to deliver.
